AD.UN should be defensive

If the big fear is inflation, investors should like a company that receives bond-like payments. Their holdings would each have to have a pretty big hit to their business before they would stop paying Alaris. And Alaris itself only has 16 employees, so little overhead to worry about costs there. AND, most of the payments it receives are in US$, so revenues are getting a boost here on the weak C$.

Alaris is a growing business, and should grow the dividend over time. That is why you would choose a stock over a GIC. I agree that GICs are getting more competitive, but Alaris still has a very attractive yield. In addition, I think down the road, a big private equity firm, like a Brookfield or Onex, could come in and buy Alaris. It would be a nice complement to their business. This is ...more

If you are expecting a steep recession, you probably shouldn't buy any stock. Maybe a utility. Right now Canada and US unemployment is near record low, the airport in Toronto can't handle the volume of people who want to travel, corporate balance sheets are solid, personal savings is high...I just don't see a steep recession.

It's interesting to hear what the Fed is expecting, but remember that it changes dramatically over time. Compare what they said this week to what they were saying last fall. They don't know the future anymore than anyone else. Also, the US Fed has a dual mandate, they have to be concerned about jobs. If job losses start to emerge, despite the oil price, they will have to pullback ...more
