Withholding TAX on TFSA

Canada has a tax treaty not to apply withholding tax on retirement accounts. TFSA is not a retirement account. RRSP is a retirement account. TD Waterhouse does not apply withholding on Return of Capital in TFSA and cash accounts. In 2019 TD Waterhouse determined Return of Cap 40% based on 2019 Amer Hotel Income statements

I was in HOT.UN for many years.  There was no withholding tax in RRSP.  There was in TFSA and of course, regular investing account.  My experience agrees with what you say, however, maybe there has been a rule change.  I have recently reentered HOT.UN but only in a regular investing account.  I expect withholding.  However, it is lessened but not eliminated if you ...more
