California lawmakers pass bill, effective 2025 $$

The bill lawmakers passed Thursday, SB58, is somewhat narrower than the one rejected last year. It would apply to several naturally occurring psychedelic drugs: psilocybin and psilocyn, which are found in mushrooms; dimethyltryptamine or DMT, which is often a main ingredient in ayahuasca tea; and mescaline. It would also allow people to grow the plants and mushrooms that contain those compounds. Mescaline is found in a number of different plants, including the peyote cactus, though peyote is excluded from the bill over concerns from Native tribes that decriminalizing it could endanger the plant by increasing demand.

The bill does not legalize sale of the drugs and restricts their use to people over 21. It would take effect in 2025.
