Treatment and Refining Charges (TC/RCs) are the fees paid to smelters by mines for converting copper concentrate to copper cathode and key revenue source for smelters.

The mixture of raw materials (mainly ore and fuel) loaded into a furnace for smelting, or the mixture of materials placed in the crucible for a secondary process such as crucible steel-making. The term is also used to refer to the actual loading of these materials into the furnace or crucible.

Smelting is the process of heating ore, and a chemical reducing agent, to produce a base metal. In this part of processing, actual metal is produced. The energy required for smelting is very expensive.
