When you manage your own money, its up to you to do your own due diligence. BCE's balance sheet has deteriorated continuously since 2008. Debt in 2008 was $10B. $20B in 2014. $36B in 2024 including prefs.  Most of these utility type companies (ex Enbridge, AT&T) have more debt now than than they did back then but I suspect, nowhere near as much as BCE. Still does not preclude the fact that you can voice your opinioin, am fully aware of doing your own diligance ,have been doing it for 40 years.

Sorry about that. I was thinking out loud having come to the realization that had I reviewed BCE's results diligently over the years, I would have dumped this stock years ago. In and of itself, investors selling and the share price tanking sends a very strong message to the company that the market has no faith in them and that they should get their act together.

no problem, the siren call of the big dividend has been too tempting to ignore for dividend investors, bce was caught in the drive to expand the fibre network assuming the debt to build it ,then the federal government sticking there nose in where it doesn't belong.

I love flash sales . People dumping stock is not a guarantee of productive decision making more like lemmings .

i added yesterday and am very comfortable with a 9.8% dividend.  no increases next year - big deal 9.8% is gravy !!!
Comment by gisellekronk on Nov 05, 2024 12:48pm
they have said no cuts in the div for 2025 , if they cut after that , the stock will drop by more than the 9.8% div they paid . good luck

Added another third position this morning at $39.86 close to 10% divi I don't need any divi growth at this rate its a great yield.  Lets face it Canada is pushing business in all sectors to the US where taxes are lower, less regulation and after investing billions in fibre you are not told by the Liberal government that you need to let everyone else on your Network. This is only the ...more

Dividend increase is usually 3%. You have the fire sale that bought at 10% cheaper than last Friday. Your got the dividend increase now than year end.

This is a Board problem; growth at any cost, even if it breaks shareholder's backs. A more disciplined approach would be to cut the dividend and apply the proceeds directly to pay-down of the debt, or not incurring more of it. I think shareholders would go for it. Bibic has a performance objective that links his variable compensation to "growing" the company; that I'm sure of ...more
