Much more nickel goes into these batteries than any of the other metal. I think I posted the link below before but it gives a good overview on Fathom Nickel and talks about the importance of nickel in EV batteries.
Specific to a typical EV battery (NMC532), the metals required are:
- 17 pounds of lithium carbonate
- 30 pounds of cobalt
- 44 pounds of manganese
- 77 pounds of nickel
Now consider how much extra nickel needs to be produced each year if indeed the International Energy Agency is correct in a report estimating some 150 million EVs will be on the road by 2030.
