They still had to invest their own money to get the options, correct?

No. The options are basically a reserved price to buy up to expiry of the terms. You will pay the money and buy them only if the market price is higher i.e. you are confident you will make money on the investment. So it is an opportunity to make money in the future with no upfront cost. Risk free.
