Where’s the love?

From The Growrg Op

BY KIM HART MACNEILL

When legalization hit, the first thing consumers complained about, after supply shortages, was the price. Nearly two years later, we’re hitting the sweet spot where producers are bringing discount brands online.

In addition to being more affordable, these options generally come with less packaging to cart around and figure out how to recycle. They’re perfect for those who want a good ride without emptying their wallet. We scoured the internet to find you the cheapest* options across the country.

Twd. Sativa ($5.66 to $5.69/g)

Canopy Growth’s discount brand stands out for its high THC levels (13–24 per cent) and purple colouring. While the buds may not be the best looking on inspection, the myrcene, alpha-pinene, and beta-caryophyllene bring a pleasantly spicy and earthly smell. Find it in Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec.

Daily Special Sativa and Indica from Aurora Drift ($4.29 to $5.43/g)

Aurora’s budget-brand doesn’t offer fancy product descriptions, but when you’re looking at a price this good who cares? It offers 15–21 per cent THC for heavy relaxation and light and airy buds. You’ll find this offering in most provincial stores.

Jean Guy from Good Supply ($5.29 to $7.30/g)

This sativa strain leans toward the stimulating and energetic end of the spectrum, and offers a THC content of 16–26 per cent (plus a possible 1 per cent CBD). The main terpene is caryophyllene, which comes with an herbal and black pepper smell.

Leafly reviewers are divided on the smell, which ranges from lemony and woodsy to “cat piss,” but apparently sticking your nose directly into the bag alleviates the second issue. Good Supply is Aphria’s discount brand, promising “no gimmicks, just nugs.” Find it at most provincial stores.

OS.110 from Original Stash ($5/g)

This hybrid flower is sun-grown in a hybrid greenhouse without using synthetic pesticides or insecticides. The THC level varies 14–20 per cent and at the moment it’s only available by the ounce, but OG notes on its website that seven gram bags are coming soon. This option is currently only available in Ontario and Quebec.

Sativa and Indica from Pure Sunfarms ($4.20/g)

While the price may bring a quick smile to your face, this is a craft flower at a budget price grown in a sunlight-drenched 1.1 million sq.-ft high-tech greenhouse in Delta, British Columbia. Each pack contains a single strain ranging from 13–16 per cent THC.

The sativa aroma ranges from fresh to fruity, and the indica from dried fruits to sweet spices. If you’re open to a surprise when it comes to taste and smell and looking for a deal, these are two solid options. Find it in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, and Saskatchewan.

Berry White from Caliber ($3.99/g)

Don’t overlook this brand based on the 10.8 per cent THC level. This small-batch crafted indica offers medium-strength mellow but it’s not a creeper. Terpenes limonene, pinene, and caryophyllene bring a fresh berry and pine smell and similar flavour, Leafly reviewers note. Plus the strong blue and light orange hairs make it fun to look at pre-consumption. Find it in Alberta and New Brunswick.

Sensi Star from Re-Up ($3.57/g)

Often spelled SNSSTR, this Zenabis offering is an award-winning indica strain that’s taken home three High Times Cannabis Cups. While it’s low on THC (9-12.9 per cent), it offers full-body effects and subtle cerebral invigoration perfect for those just starting out. On the terpene side, it offers myrcene, caryophyllene, and limonene. Find it on sale at Cannabis NB for $100 per ounce.

I remember all the chirping around here about how our $4.20/g weed was going to catapult us to sales leaders. The other LPs wouldn't be able to compete with our "award winning" weed at these prices. We might not be able to keep up with the supply - our experts proclaimed. Less than a week until the month is up, and as lovingstocks pointed out - radio silence.  ...more

Exactly. When the dried bud price wars start, the big players are going to be busy under-cutting each other, and the small growers are going to be collateral damage. Unless a small grower can differentiate itself with a unique product like pre-rolled sticks...

I have a feeling we'll get an announcement this Friday but usually those feelings are wrong. Lol
