Today's top story: Cannabis companies use UX design to boost online sales, compete with in-store shopping. Photo: herbadea Berlin, Unsplash
Cannabis companies with a focus on e-commerce and online shopping have stiff competition from brick-and-mortar retailers.

That’s why the customer needs to have a seamless, enjoyable experience when interacting with any marijuana business’ website.

Enter user-experience (UX) design.

Increasingly, forward-thinking cannabis firms are drawing on the philosophies and methods from the UX field to improve consumers’ experiences and build brands.

“UX design is a crucial tool for any cannabis company that uses the internet to do business,” MJBizDaily reporter and editor Bart Schaneman said. “We all know how to use apps like Spotify and Uber and Door Dash. Cannabis businesses need their websites to work just as well as those mainstream brands or risk turning off consumers.”

Not to mention that people shopping for cannabis are accustomed to walking into a marijuana retailer and having a personalized and often fun experience, Schaneman added. That should also factor into a cannabis company’s UX design.

Schaneman’s featured story on cannabis and UX design explores how several marijuana businesses are using UX to do better business.

Suppose you’ve never been a grower or run a cultivation facility.

In that case, you need a professional to guide you because it can cost $10 million-plus to build and operate one.

Managing financials for a high-priced operation is also risky if you go over budget. What if you need an additional, say, $4 million?

That’s not so easy to acquire quickly. Understanding equipment costs and the costs per square foot is essential to getting your projections correct.
