Good example of why we are in this mess

Lafarge Holcim switched from burning coal to burning tires to reduce its emissions at one of their plants. Yep, tires. No need for CCS as long as you don't mind the toxins. Global Warming or Cancer.. make your choice! Crazy times. https://globalnews.ca/news/5920274/lafarge-brookfield-cement-plant/amp/ https://www.ecomena.org/tire-burning-kilns/

Brookfield that is. I have Holcim on the brain because they made a deal with CST's competition. So Lafarge in general is in my bad books.

It has little to do with carbon capture. If they can get a 30% reduction by changing fuels the loss of potential business for CST is not a relevant issue for anyone but us.   They'd get paid to burn tires, much like US cement kilns which can burn hazardous waste because of the long rotary kiln residence time.  I think it's a good use for surplus waste tires but the public ...more

The fact that it makes meore economic sense for LaFarge to do that than capture co2 seems relevant enough to me. It goes back to government. At least in USA, companies will be paid to sequester or use co2 by the tonne. Canada is so far behind.

If they were alternatives I would agree with you, but they are separate issues.  If and when we have a meaningful cost for carbon pollution LaFarge is still going to weigh carbon capture against levies and offsets. Meanwhile they can get paid to burn a post consumer waste that is otherwise uneconomic to deal with and a public health hazard (mosquito breeding pools, tire fires).  This ...more

I understand. My reference to cancer came from the second link I provided in my post.

The ecomena article is about the hazards of open burning of tires, nothing to do with cement kiln burning except for the mention of EPA standards which apply to all tire-as-fuel applications.   Not only does this not back up your comments, it ignores the public health hazard of open fires on tire piles which the LaFarge contract is going to mitigate. Our problems are rooted in political ...more
