Why you should not invest in coal

You want a reason not to invest in this semi-soft, marginal mixing steel, high grade thermal, coal?

Arctic sea ice in the Central Arctic Basin is showing unprecedented (in this epoch) signs of weakness.

There are cracks forming, in the permanent darkness of January, between Canada's Ellesmere Island and right through the North Pole. 1600km long.

Frontline Scientists posting to Arctic tracking blogs are expressing deep fears that an ice free Arctic summer is nearly guaranteed within the next 2-5 years.

The newly ice poor Arctic is such a new phenomenon (first real collapse in area in 2007) that scientists simply haven't caught up. We are flying blind. We are only now realizing the potential changes in store as a Warm Arctic, Cold Continent scenario in winter becomes more likely (and is a likely driver of the current frigid temperatures in Easter Canada/US.)

This is what drives me these days to oppose incredibly short sighted projects like Raven. I will admit it. I am driven by fear, by fear of the unknown as our planet changes in ways we have predicted but struggle to fully grasp and fail to attempt to reverse.

It is time we all invest ourselves, financially and mentally, in projects that could lessen the damage, we, our children, our grandchildren, and our great grandchildren will be faced with. We must reduce our energy usage. We must massively increase our clean energy production.

Please don't invest in Raven. Pull out now. I beg of you, for your children's sake.

"I'm not sure I understand you chrisale. There are so many other projects that have or will have greater impact on our environment, and there's other things that pollute our air." Wrong. The coal burned from Raven exports will represents the single largest contribution to CO2 emissions from Vancouver Island. Just because it won't be burned here doesn't mean we don't ...more

Tell chris to stop fear mongering.  He may fear the potential damage being caused by fossil fuels which he consumes, but how about the fear that the miners and other Raven applicants who need jobs to put food on the table for their children right now have?   I'm sure he hates the extra traffic in his backyard but that is part and parcel of progress today ...more
