US doesn't need Canadian Lumber

Maybe  Canadian  lumber  should  have a Red  maple  leaf stamped  on  every  stick , sheet  and engeniered beams.....Ibet most americans  have  no  idea  where so much of their  building materials come  from and  the  duties  the US consumers already  pay to subsidize  US producers.

So on that basis, the new tariffs add US$58 to the price paid by U.S. buyers compared with $32 under the previous rate. Producers of higher-value products, such as Western red cedar that sells for more than $1,000 per 1,000 board feet, face steeper bills, Niquidet said.

Just wait till the  fire , tornado  and  Huricane damaged  homes  need to be  replaced to see  how  much  Canadian  lumber  is  not  needed. The current cost of the lumber package for a typical single-family home is about $30,000 — $13,000 more than it was in April 2020. Although a price spike of this magnitude adversely impacts ...more

Dude, your not realizing one major point here. The US has vast stretches of private timberlands in places like the southern states and a lot of it was planted during and after the second world war. Theres no shortage of mills and timberlands and the smart companies in Canada like West Fraser Timber and Canfor have been buying up private timberlands and manufacturing plants in the US for the last ...more

You are dead wrong WC. The Canadian lumber companies were not running away from Canada, they were being proactive against American protectionist policies including exhorbinant tariffs. The U.S. has huge swaths of private timberland that they could forsee being harvested in the near future and took action.   Good, smart forward thinking business

BS. You are dead wrong. Come to BC and witness the firewalls the NDP are throwing up in front of timber availability. Talk to John Rustad, the leader of the provincial Conservatives that just came within 22 votes of giving the boot to the NDP in the recent election, about the roadblocks the woods industry faces under this government. If your an Indigenous group you get everything, if your an ...more

It's not Canadian policy, it is the reality of a shrinking market.  The U.S. may soon become very close to being self sufficient in the lumber market barring a boom in the housing industry.

Forest companies in BC face the same hurdles that the mining industry has. Currently 17 potential new mining projects that sit idle because of the NDPs dithering and stalling and red tape. Leftwing governments are really bad for resource industries and instead of encouraging thousands of jobs they would rather leave it in the ground. I guess if child slave labour in the Congo mines your critical ...more

You're blaming the government, yet the U.S. says the government is doing too much.  Are you calling the U.S. government's position on this issue as BS? Yes, the Canadian federal government has been accused of subsidizing the Canadian lumber industry:  Harvesting fees  ...more

Softwood lumber dispute has been going on for decades because in the US, forestland is private and they look upon Canadian producers as getting free wood from crown land. It goes on endlessly because a thousand lawyers get rich every few years when it all comes up again. Wood is hardly anything close to being free with stumpage rates, and all associated logging  costs but in BC the NDP have ...more

Comment by westcoastlogger on Jan 08, 2025 2:15pm
Mining is mired in something and maybe it isn't red tape but something you shovel out of the barn. Its pending new projects I'm talking about and the NDPs Dave Eby himself said the other day that yes they have much work to do on expediting these projects. But thats all they ever do. They just pay it lip service and kick the can down the road and Canfor and West Fraser bought forestland and ...more

And Ork lumber markets come and  go and West Fraser and Canfor have been buying properties in the US for years when markets were up and down. Your mindless ranting makes no sense. They want a wood supply your lunatic government cant get their hands on.
Comment by Ork on Jan 08, 2025 3:06pm
lol so you just backtracked on everything you WROTE earlier- dude stop flipping & a flapping, course they're going to go where CHEAP wood is cheap to get to American markets means cutting in AMERICA - lol at least that'll slow the fires down
Comment by westcoastlogger on Jan 08, 2025 4:19pm
Stop mindlessly flapping your gums and saying they went south because the markets were down. You dont have a clue what your talking about because the markets have never been a static thing. The lefty treehugging governments in Canada tend to cave into lobbyists and remove cutting rights. They saw the writing on the wall and are getting out. I never fipped on anything I said you clown.
