Another subject...

Being 45 and in a 401k, pension plan, and private investment portfolio, with three kids (one in college, one 14, and one 4) I am concerned with how the market(s) are reacting to BOTH the European debt politics and the banking sector falling on whatever news from Europe comes out on a daily basis. We use "Principal" for the 401k at my office and below is this mornings' snapshot. Although I am not quite a bad off as some of my co-workers whom only periodically monitor and/or modify their contributions and distributions, the percentages listed are my rate of return, ytd.

I am not looking for advice necessarily, but to open a 'Not Investment Advice' type discussion on retirement savings.

The smartest thing I did in the 70's was to start several DRIP accounts when I got married, with holdings like Mobil, PECO, Energen, BBT, Kaman, Southern Co., etc.........then expanding the portfolio to Intel, Cisco, Microsoft, Oracle, Omega Healthcare, etc. in the late 80's. I made an honest effort to put aside $100 per month and spread the wealth in all the DRIP stocks I owned, sometimes ...more

StockArchangel, Sir, no matter what happens with this or any other stock we may or may not be mutually invested in, I am better off for having met you here. Thank you for that. I had not considered DRIP accounts previously with the exception of the Honeywell shares that I inherited a while ago. I had thought about bolstering my private account with ETF's but got turned off very quickly ...more

I know you guys are going to laugh, and its probably not a good idea today, but I also put aside $50 every month from 1982 to 1997 and bought $100 EE Savings bonds. Starting next year, I'll be getting close to $300 per month as an added "almost retirement" bonus. It will keep me in beer money and pay my car insurance until I'm age 74 - after which I'm my children's ...more
