Coal Demand
Coal Demand and Supply Capacity in China Expected to Reach 3 Billion Metric Tons in 2010
BEIJING --May 28, 2008--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Coal demand and supply will keep on steady growth, and on general balance. Both the demand and supply capacity are expected to reach about 3 billion metric tons in 2010, said Wang Xianzheng, chairman of the China Coal Industry Association, at the China Energy Summit -- CHITEC 2008 (the 11th China Beijing International High-Tech Expo) held in Beijing on May 24, 2008.
As of the end of 2007, China had 7,066 coal enterprises above designated scale. Of which, there are 34 mining districts and 14 coal mines with annual coal output over 10 million metric tons. Coal output in China has been increased from 618 million metric tons in 1978 to 2.54 billion metric tons in 2007. Presently, coal production and consumption accounts for 76% and 69% respectively in China's primary energy.
"Current coal production capacity in China is 2 billion metric tons, plus another 1.1 billion metric tons of coal production capacity under construction, the nation's coal production capacity will reach about 3 billion metric tons in 2010," said Wang. The expected coal consumption in 2010 will also be about 3 billion metric tons. "Despite increase in capacity, regional or sporadic shortages or surpluses of certain kinds of coal products are likely, and protective measures will be taken." said Wang.
Industrial concentration will be kept on improving. "By 2010, China will have 6~8 large-scaled coal enterprise groups with annual output at 100 million metric tons and 8~10 groups with annual output at 50 million metric tons. Output of these coal enterprises will account for more than half of the total output in China," said Wang. According to plan, China will focus on the construction of 13 large-scaled coal mines. By 2010, output of these coal mines will reach 2.24 billion metric tons, accounting for 86% of the total output in China; the number of small coal mines will be reduced to 10,000 and the proportion of coal output from large, medium and small coal mines will be adjusted to 56%, 17% and 27% respectively.
