Alt-media not getting much love this Valentine's Day

  1. Georgia Straight's new owner, Overstory, which also owns The Coast in Halifax, is in the news this morning for slashing staff and cutting back on expansion plans.. The remaining staff are feuding openly with the clueless CEO, and investor Andrew Wilkinson is squealing that he's out $5 million on his stupid bet. Moans Andy: “Not fun. News is hard.”
  2. NOW Toronto, acquired recently from bankrupt MediaCentral by Mr. Gomez Addams of Gomez Media Group (please fact-check this claim), is officially now a digital-only play. Unfortunately, Now's readership metrics continue to suck, according to the Similarweb tracking service. Now is currently getting around 350,000 site visits per month. Not a great story to tell potential advertisers when compared to Zoomer Media's BlogTO.com, a direct competitor, which logs 12 million hits monthly.
