Usually when mergers go through those the acquiring comp stock goes up? or drops as people start selling off?

It might not be just paper money for tax purposes though.  For all of the CRA tax experts out there, is this takeover going to be considered as a deemed dispositation for tax purposes?  If so, I assume it would apply for all of the various options, with the disposition value being the end of day valuation for the Aurora shares along with any cash which you might have received.  Is ...more

GT are you saying you can write off stock losses? I don't think so , not at all . There only concern is your capital gains 50 percent of profit taxed at your marginal tax rate.  Imo

No, I believe he is simply saying that his CMED shares are being held in his RRSP and TFSA accounts which are not taxable. Well, the RRSP account is taxable, but only when you withsraw the actual funds from your account.  If his CMED shares were held in regular non-register accounts, then I assume the capital gains would indeed be taxable while any losses could be use to offset other capital ...more

Completely false... looking back at the disclosure's relating from the Aurora hostile takeover shows those numbers are completely off. Maybe they were talking about Newstrike and were confused as those numbers are more in line with Newstrike
