Three Forks Formation

Three Forks Formation Larger than Bakken

FROM:| KXNet.com North Dakota News

Most of the oil drilling in North Dakota is going on in the Bakken formation.

But there is another formation that's gaining popularity.

It's called the Three Forks formation - and it's immediately below the Bakken.

Lynn Helms, says the Three Forks is part of the Bakken system.

He says producers are trying to find out if they'll get more oil out of the Bakken by drilling lower to the Three Forks or if they should drill into both formations.

(Lynn Helms, ND Dir. Oil & Gas) "We've talked a lot about low oil recovery from Bakken 1-2% of original oil in place out of Bakken oil system. Our hope is out of this three forks drilling we may be able to double that recovery. And that's a tremendous economic opportunity."

The Three Forks is an example of how new technology is being developed to get more recovery out of the current oil play...

(Lynn Helms) "The three forks is larger than the Bakken. It covers larger part of Western ND and extends well south. So the exciting thing is utilizing this play we may be able to extend this further east and south than used to see going."

Helms says seven out of the 84 rigs in North Dakota are drilling in the Three Forks formation.
