business media sources are suspiciously quiet about the Macy's/HBC takeover talks which makes me wonder if this is a particularly well kept secret or if discussions have reached an impasse.

Based on the HBC stock price yesterday and today I would agree but it would be useful if Macy's/HBC management would give investors an update rather than treating us like mushrooms (keeping us in the dark).

I couldn't agree more. From reading bloomberg. The takeover seems to be a positive!
