Peter Hodson, CEO of 5i Research and editor of Canadian MoneySaver, has galloped to the front of the field at the mid-point of this year's Financial Post Stock Pickers Challenge ... Peter Imhof, an investment strategist at Sprott Asset Management, held on to third place ... By coincidence, both Mr. Hodson and Mr. Imhof have selected Canadian Venture Exchange-listed Mart Resources Inc. for the third quarter. This year's contest is limited to dividend paying securities, which give shareholders a regular payout that helps reduce losses during market downturns and helps increase returns when stocks climb. Most investors associate dividends with large, well-established companies, but even some relatively small companies pay dividends. To review, each participant is given $10,000 to split between three stocks or exchange-traded funds listed in North America. Players are allowed to rebalance their portfolios each quarter. His picks for the third quarter:
Mart Resources Inc., based in Calgary, has oil field development partnerships and projects in Nigeria that produce 12,000 barrels per day. The company paid out an initial dividend of 10¢ - yielding 14% on the $1.43 share price - and plans a 5¢ quarterly payout.
"The dividend is exceptionally large and unusual for a first-time payout," Mr. Hodson said. "The company is trying to make a statement that, yes they have a lot of cash flow and excellent prospects. It is risky but we have only once seen a company start a dividend and then quickly omit it.
"It's a high risk pick, but hopefully since they just announced the dividend it will be safe for three months, and hopefully there is no political crisis in Nigeria."

Mr. Imhof is sticking with two of his second-quarter selections but has dropped Silver Wheaton, replacing it with Mart Resources, which turns out to be one of Mr. Hodson's picks. (Contestants do not know each others' selections.)

Mart Resources, a Calgary based oil producer with projects in Nigeria, has been expanding its oil production quickly and spins off an incredible amount of cash flow, Mr. Imhof said.
"One must be cautious of the political environment."

Hopefully this will give a good boost to MMT this week.
