Actually, according to revenue Canada, if you buy back within 30 days, you technically can't claim a loss on your stock. I say technically because you can always enter it in your income report. However, if they audit your income report, they will revise it to exclude the loss if you bought back within 30 days. It is called the superficial loss rule: the 30-day trading rule in Canada applies

If you hold shares in a non tfsa account and you sell them at a loss, you get a tax loss, you can then apply to any gains in the year. To get the tax loss you cannot buy shares for that company for thirty days in any account you own after you sell.
