Copper Supply

Came across the 1Q21 commodity report from Goehring & Rozencwajg, highlighting the coming problems with copper supply.  Their concluding paragraph was:

The copper bull market is now underway. Investors are beginning to appreciate the demand story surrounding copper but most investors do not understand the complex issues now affecting supply. Between 2000 and 2020, high copper prices allowed compa- nies to grow their reserve basis even in the face of limited new copper discoveries. Because of increasing depletion issues, the lack of new world class mines coming online, and geological constraints embedded in copper porphyry deposits, our research tells us that copper supply will show little growth this decade. Strong demand is about to collide with severe copper supply problems. Copper prices are heading much, much higher.

They did an analysis on copper supply in 2016 and just re-did it.  The increase in production (and reserves) from 2000 to through 2014 was primarily at brownfields with the increased reserves due to reducing the cut-off grades.  Since then the amount of increased production and reserves have flattened out as the ability to reduce cut-off grades will only marginally increase reserves, given the nature of copper porphyries.  New mine production in the past 6 years has been relatively limited.  Hence, their conclusion.

I would agree with all of that however....it's run a long way very quickly. The stocks even more so. If we have a market crash the fake economic recovery will crash too and then demand for things containing copper.  The system is incredibly fragile, a mother of all bubbles and no matter how good the future narrative can be told it can all come crashing down through no fault of its own ...more

And that is why you stay alert and flexible, not tuck your tail between your legs and scurry away like a rat. b.

You have a self confidence problem don't you?  Low self esteem?  I've already made my year. I don't need to risk anything now and so I'm not.  People who cannot leave the casino will find the exit very crowded when they're forced to leave. I suspect you'll be among them. I'd wager that you have very little experience...am I right?

Yep, just ask around.  They'll tell ya how meek and retiring I am.  Of course living in the middle of a salt flat will tend to draw down one's self esteem, wouldn't it? How much you want to wager on the "very little experience"?  Been doing this since two thousand- two.  How about you?  LOL b.

Got 20 more years on you. But whatever...good luck to you.  No point in me pontificating now...cheers!

Long term, things look very good for CU. But the CU price has exploded of late and I expect a correction. I've done quite well with NCU of late so actually reduced my position about 5% today.

" reduced my position about 5% today." Self-fulfilling prophesy.  b,
