Grassroots Opposition

Are you aware that this proposed in-situ mine is located in the geographical center of an incorporated town?  There is an elementary school within 2 miles, a highly-rated Anthem development within 5 miles, and it is on a primary arterial road connecting with the larger metropolitan areas of Phoenix and Tucson.  Curis has bombarded us with daily propaganda promising the moon and has even persuaded short-sighted residents that injecting billions of gallons of sulfuric acid into the ground is a good thing.  NOT!!  There is an ongoing grassroots movement opposing the mine that is not funded by any developer or special-interest group, although it is supportive of their research and input.  Hundreds of local residents and the Town Council of Florence have rejected and opposed the mine for two years now.  Curis hopes they can wait out the Town and eventually get their way while spending millions of their investors' dollars on a public relations campaign.  There have already been exceedances reported to the EPA of magnesium, sulfates and total dissolved solids from the ten-year-old BHP test wells on the site.  We don't want to be long-term test rats for this operation and we will continue to fight against it.

The land was zoned industrial before the town changed it to residential hoping to cash in the building boom.  The exceeding ...more

Oh by the way, for every real estate transaction in the surrounding area, there is a disclaimer in the property purchase agreement that states that a mine exists in the surrounding area. It is in fine print and it is legally put there by the state for the past 40 years.  So go read your purchase agreement..... the state has a disclaimer that advises the purchaser of the presence of a ...more

Not that you probably care about  facts, but have you ever wondered how an in-situ mine that has been sitting dormant for 10 years could possibly be polluting the ground water? The ground water is constantly moving (this is probaly news to you also) so if the operations from 10-years ago left anything negative, then it would have migrated far away from Florence by now. Whatever ...more

elgin1, I believe the mindset of those that live in the area would not be any different if they lived elsewhere.  To insinuate that these people should not have purchased a home in the area knowing full well the mine was physically there is quite supercilious.  Americans cherish their right to freedom of speech and expression.  These people ...more
