When Harry met (my) Sally

In 2009, I bought my wife some “deep storage” diamonds. Allow me to explain...

2009 was the first year Canadians could park some of their play dough in a Tax Free Savings Account (a TFSA). Our TFSA limit that first year was $5000 CDN each.

So Silver bought himself more silver & gold stocks of course BUT also bought the wife some diamonds – some Harry Winston diamonds. Well, some “deep storage” HW diamonds:

1,500 shares of HW at (an easy to remember) $3.21 per share in early 2009.

Those 1,500 shares purchased in 2009 at a cocky $3.21 per share were held patiently, and then sold six years later at $19.50 per share the third week of Jan 2015.

Nope, we did not catch the $20+ per share top back then: our goal was a 5 bagger so we sold & bagged our “507% Flawless” profit @ $19.50. The 5 bagger was our game plan. Mission accomplished.

Diamonds are my girl’s best friend once again. We plan to repeat the HW-DDC performance here in PGD “hopefully” - but in a much bigger way this time.

We’ve got 200,000 reasons to be "hopeful" going into 2017. How about you millhouse?

In 1993 my wife took a small buyout from work to stay home and look after the kids. Took the funds to one brokerage house but got the impression the female broker (investment advisor) had a abuse problem. So off to Nesbitt Burns and we were introduced to Michel Mendenhall. 1994 he put us into 4000 shares of a small gold company called Bre-X at $2.10 a share. The next several years were tumultuous ...more

Nicely done MrB. We also owned Bre-X but did not hold it not nearly long enough. That stock defined irrational exuberance. Crazy times back then MrB! JDSU – WOW!!! From wiki (I did not know it was this much of a rollercoaster): During the 1990s, JDS Uniphase stock was a high-flyer tech stock investor favorite. Its stock price doubled three times and three ...more

1998 to 2000 were the years the internet expanded big time from a hardware expansion. Since then it has mostly been about compressing the snot out of every bit of data out there. 2008 GFC happened after china had just finished spending a boatload of money leading up to the Olympics. Next commodity boom is going to be vicious as countries fight over the limited supply. Canada will do well in that ...more
