Thought I'd contribute a little here to perhaps dispel thoughts that Baffin Island has little mineral development and that Iqualuit is toally dependent on Chidliak and will build them a dock and road...

Effective a few years ago the Mary River iron ore project of Baffinland Iron Mines commenced mining and shipping the highest grade iron ore in the world!
They built their own road and ship to their own 'port', albeit to barges currently.

However, an expansion is in the works...and it will happen long before Chidliak IMO as the Mary River iron ore improves steelmaking productivity in European steelworks by 15-20%! Demand is high & the mine is making money like crazy!! AND, it is PRIVATELY OWNED!

Expansion Project
The Mary River Project is currently permitted to extract and ship up to 4.2 Mt of iron ore per year to international markets from the Port site in Milne Inlet. To effectively compete in the international iron ore markets, Baffinland has begun the approvals process to expand Project operations. The proposed Phase 2 Expansion Project would involve constructing a railway from the Mary River Mine Site to the Port Site, adding a second ore dock at the Port and increasing production to 12 Mt per year along the northern transportation corridor. Documents related to the proposed Expansion Project including formal submissions, community consultation materials and FAQs will be posted here as the Approvals process progresses.

Baffinland Iron Mines has also applied for an exploration permit along the coast. They are looking at constructing a camp in the summer of 2018 and doing exploration work in 2019. I have heard that Arcellor Mital may have actually divested a % of their ownership in Mary River...but have not yet confirmed it myself. It is also causing major friction between the communities in the Qikiqtaaluk. Specifically between Iqaluit, who is very far from the mine, and Pond Inlet/Arctic Bay. The high north communities feel they are not receiving their fair share of the benefits of the mining royalties and more than their fair share of the socio-economic fall outs of being so close to the mine. Thanks for the detailed assessment of impacts on various communities and associations. Definitely complex and needs real attention from companies wanting to exploit resources there. One of your comments suggests that Chidliak with all-weather road could save $$ by using local (Iqualuit) workforce. Just wondering whether 12 shifts combined with 2+ hr drive each way would prove socially beneficial

One of the major responsibilities and obstacles facing Baffinland is hitting their inuit employment targets. And one of the major obstacles to hitting that is that many people cannot handle the shift rotations of 2 weeks on 2 off. As all communities are fly-in-fly-out it would not be economical to make one week shifts but if it was merely a two hour drive you could easily accommodate that. Maybe

I did a quick check of the base case PEA and there is allocation for onsite camps. "The camp will comprise single-occupancy rooms with central washrooms. It will be used during the construction stage and throughout the operations stage. There will be seven dormitory wings, each capable of housing 42 people for a total of 294 beds." I can almost guarantee you there will be on site dorms (as you've stated EKIM). About the maximum I will run my workers is approx.100kms (max.), after that it is no longer cost effective. They will also want to be paid for that time on the road, plus the other issue becomes safety related. The more personnel on the road, the more likelyhood of something happening. This then becomes a liability

I know at least one site pushing to do 3 weeks in and 3 weeks out as far across the board as possible. Dorm rates are standard, but you will be reducing the cost of flying workers from all across Canada and some even from the US. I'm curious as to whether Chidliak would still charter planes from either Ottawa to Iqaluit and/or Montreal to Iqaluit...or try and rely on commercial airlines to

The deep water port will be built in Iqaluit regardless of Chidliak. However, the Chidliak project could benefit greatly from this port.
