Need to Quit Worrying About Short Term Swings

I see a lot of commentary on this board about 2 and 3 dollar swings in this stock price. This not not a good candidate for short term trading. Buy it, collect your dividend and ignore the share price. Trying to figure out what moves the price a buck one way or the other on any particular day really is a mugs game. What I look at is the 6 month, 1 year and 5 year trends. Is the share price showing an upward trajectory, growing earnings and increasing dividends. You can easily answer yes for this stock. Is there any reason to expect that long term trend to reverse, NO. Buy, hold, don't check stock price every day, it will make you nutz. Sleep well.

Hey Dean How she go these days? All top-shelf down here in Calgary.  Sage advice as usual. There sure are a lot of worry-warts out there. So many people claim to be long term investors but spend yonks of time fretting the day to day. My wife & I own a full positin in 4 midstreamers (PPL,TRP,KEY,ENB) and PPL is by far our fav. TRP is now looking pretty good at these levels after getting ...more

Agree with your thoughts. My problem is I own 66,574 shares and every dollar down is a eye opner. LOL But I have been in it for the long term and plan to stay that way. Divi increase coming after the KKR full integration. GLTA

Holy moly, that's a sh*t-load of shares. Is PPL your only holding or are you incredibly rich?  :-) I still totally disagree on the "eye-opener part". Short term paper losses don't mean a thing to a true long term investor especailly with a terrific company like PPL. As an example, my wife & I were down significantly in Mar, 2020 with the Covid lock-downs. I didn't ...more

Sarg I converted all of my IPL shares into PPL. That resulted in me holding a lot of shares in PPL. I have really enjoyed owning them. Although I track them DAily, I know deep down, that they will bounce back admirably. The divi alone from PPL has made life a lot easier in my early retirement. I also own KEY,  ENB, SU, IGM and BCE all great dividend paying stocks.. In MArch 2020 my entire ...more

Hey Ariahp First off, congrats are being so well-off and being able to retire early. Just your PPL is a lot of scratch so throwing in the others means quite the big portfolio. Our portfolio is a decent size but smaller than yours. We've experienced some significant swings but have never ever worried about them for even a second. Back in the throws of the Mar 2020 crash, we were actually down ...more

Sarg: You have a very well balanced portfoilio. In hindsight, I wish I had bought some bank shares, instead I lost about 125k in the MJ sector. I did own T, sold it recently and bought IGM and BCE and i have done well on both. Now My worst day ever was Tuesday March 10, 2020 I was down $1,738,205.43. That is one day I will never forget. Biggest day loss $209k and biggest Day gain $180k Yet ...more

Hey Ariahp Thanks on the portfolio comments. My wife & I are really steady-eddy so no risky stuff like MJ for us. We actually avoid anything directly related to a commodity, gold, high tech, consumer, etc. Just the 5 sectors. We are truly long term buy & hold eg: BCE 2009, EMA 2010, AQN 2011, PPL, BNS,DIR.UN 2013, etc. As mentioned, we never trim or sell unless something really ...more

Hey Red Long time, no hear. I hope all is going well ont he Island. Thanks on the congrats. It's sure been a fabulous run. Hey Sarge: I get my OAS clawed back and I have Zero problem with that. I just consider my self lucky enough that I dont NEED it There are people who rely on their OAS and I am glad to be foregoing mine to give to the less fortunate. About Turdy.....hope he goes into oblivion soon . We need a breath of fresh air in Ottawa. GLTA

Incredible! That's a boat load of shares! I sure hope you don't have your eggs all in 1 basket! With that amount of shares you're collecting just under $14k a month. The share dropping -- let's say --- $3 and your value drops almost $200k! Wow...that's a big risk. That's why, for me, I'd prefer shares to head up over time and not just " flatline" through time. ...more

You're the typical "total return" investor that thinks his way is the only way. You also seem to be the one that is the biggest worry-wart and most impatient on this board. Anyway, there are actually other investment strategies that can work really well. My wife & I are dividend income/growth investors and are 100% invested in TSX listed dividend paying stocks. Maybe this comment from you was inappropriate??? "It's gone nowhere except a quarterly dividend. Well, you're a suck in a 3 piece suit if one is happy with that." Have all the opinions you want, but maybe present them more respectfully?

I absolutely agree with you that a stock must show an upward trend over time, grow earnings and dividends. That is exactly what I wrote in the first post. I also completely agree with you about Manulife, and I have posted those exact comments on that board. It is a stock to be traded, not a long term buy and hold. Holding the wrong stock is a bad idea. Over the last 10 years holding RBC gave you ...more

Stockmaster1 I remember when the shares were at about $26. I kept on buying. Today my average is $34.27, so I am in the green. When it eventually goes to say $52, that $5 * 66,574= over $330k I own KEY, ENB, SU, IGM &  BCE, AL L THESE OVER A PERIOD OF 35 YEARS. I AM NOW EARLY RETIRED! I am doing ok in life.

Thanks for the kind response Araihp. That's awesome that PPL is doing you great. I just added PPL to my portfolio in January 2022 so I haven't held it as low as you have. My cost is just about the $38 level. And as I said previously here. I plan on holding this and adding for a long time.  I just wish I had as many shares as you currently have lol. Unreal! :)

Oh, and I'm really liking SU at this level. I think the current change will benefit Sunor down the road. A nice Divy increase too.
