Dividend Treatment by CRA and the IRS

Because the earnings are in the US how does CRA  treat the distribution and is there any holdback of Divy payout for IRS.

On the T3 it shows up as foreign non-business income so taxable at 100%. The last few distributions of 2019 were 35% return of capital, 12% capital gain, and 53% foreign non-business income.  So 1/3 tax free, 12% taxable at 50%, and 53% taxable at 100%. There is no tax withheld and the reason might be because the REIT invests in the US properties via an LP and receives the income in the ...more
