Pilot's Negociations: Interesting next weeks

In collective agreements negociations, there is always a part of strategy.
Usually, they take place at their normal pace (5 days a week, 9 to 5) until a critical moment arrives. Then they accelerate, each party putting their real offers on the table.

For Air Canada, the summer season begin in a few weeks, Nobody wants trouble; travel disruptions. So, normally, Air Canada and pilots will disclose soon theirs red lines and the real discussions will begin , at another pace. The last agreement is terminated since september, the Union didn't move agressively to date, a positive signal.

Interesting to watch. A settlement have to happens before mid may, otherwise union could plan some travel disruptions.

My thoughs is that scales, guides have already been established by US airlines and Westjet. The Air Canada agreement would not be so difficult to establish; an agreement without disturbances is the more probable issue.

They entered into a mediation agreement until at least June 1st, with a 15 day notice to terminate mediation after if 1 party chooses leave the mediation. Add in the typical aprox 90 timeline to be in a strike position, then summer is protected. As long as an impass isn't declared by the mediator before the June 1st, then summer is safe from job action.

The Air Canada pilots union is quite transparent, there are videos on instagram that discusses the mediation and timeline. You can follow them at @aircanadapilots https://www.instagram.com/reel/C35ooktO4n7/?igsh=eTNlMWhrY2k0c2sy https://www.instagram.com/reel/C4GjMPYs4TH/?igsh=MXI5ejNjeW91YzIzcQ==

Thanks, very instructive.  Yep, AC is protected from a full strike this summer. Anyway, importance of Air Canada in the economy would force the government to stop a strike, as the Harper government threatened in 2011. A full strike is not really an option. But what about disruptions, other  types of actions ? I mean refusal to work overtime, strickly observance of the agreements, etc ...more
