Perfect Storm is Brewing

This was a very nice nugget LB dropped on us shareholders.......

I would like to share with all shareholders a Tungsten fact. There is 1.4kgs of Tungsten used in the manufacturing or contained in every new EV. This is expected to increase to closer to 2kgs over the next three years as electrical components develop and could top out at 2.5kgs as tungsten-based cathode coatings in lithium-ion batteries are introduced.”...... LB

  • GTP will be a major tungsten supplier to the USA.
  • There is approximately 276M vehicles registered in the US
  • Currently the US manufactures 8.8M each year on average but this number has dropped over the period of COVID.
  • The average age of cars is 13.1 years in the US
  • The average age of light trucks is 11.6

Considering the mandated switch to EV's by 2035, the current age of each vehicle, and each car will need 2KG of tungsten (that is 1 MTU for every 5 vehicles) has all the earmarks of the perfect storm for Tungsten!

Let us go bigger. How many kilos of Tunsten is needed for a long haul semi-trailer batterie powered truck ? How many trucks run on the road now as oil burners ? Big trucks need big batteries as we know that EV motors have high speed capabilities in the Tesla car, and we know it has high torque. The main problem for long haul trucks on EV is to maintain the pulling power and have a decent range ...more

It is one thing to build and drive a longhaul E-truck, but it is quite another to drive it under load. I wonder how well it performs at full load, what the mileage is then as well as the draw on the batteries. I have see a few battery fires at data centers in my life and I am still skeptical about batteries.

My understanding is that the larger truck manufacturers like Daimler Truck are more focussing on hydrogen fuel cells than batteries. But coming back to electric vehicles: I don't know much about the nuts and bolts of battery technology, does anybody here know if the adoption of tungsten to the tune of 2 kg per vehicle is really a done deal or could other materials used alternatively ...more

The dilema with batteries is they need to reduce the size of the anodes and cathodes, so they can store more power within the same size battery footprint. They also need to be able to charge batteries very quickly so depending upon the materials used to make anodes and cathodes, most will over heat and catch fire.  The only material thus far that can have a small footprint and very ...more

@therunner i can say (from the "inside") that you have most of the major players in europe considering the h2 to be the most technically suitable longterm solution for trucks. if successfully implemented it will also allow for personal vehicles to switch to h2 on the longterm (fingers crossed). but they need to sort out the logistics (getting the product at acceptable costs to the ...more

Good Point's Ionade I am think the future will be hydrogen fuel cells or fusion reactor and I don't think it will be batteries unless the technology significantly changes and is more economical. Take EVs for example.....you buy an EV and then 5-7 years later, your batteries are exhausted and need replacing.  The cost of replacing the batteries is 1/2 the price of a new car. Do ...more

Yes, if you are not in a hurry the horse and cart sounds better. Just clipity-clop down the road, replenish with creek water and free grass on the side of the road, and the horse might live a happy working life of 25-30 years. Solar pannels on your roof have a life span of about 10 years, so a $10,000 installation is a kick in the guts as far as savings go. Once "fusion" is mastered, . ...more

@5ilver Horse and buggy!...lol.... Can you picture the gridlock? And dysentary will be rampant. Solar Panels!......They are nice when it is sunny, but no one talks about the cost of disposal of them when they are at the end of life as you just can't throw them in the garbage.  A nice surprise for those who own them. To master Fusion, we must first find the Monolith ...more

Fortescue mining is planning to be carbon neutral in 8 years. They are spending billions of dollars in the next couple of years to achieve this. https://ffi.com.au/technology/green-hydrogen/

I like that term... "Carbon Neutral"..... its a word Politicians and Big Polluters like to use.  Definition:  Carbon Neutral:  "I am a big contributor to global warming, but ignore that and focus on all of the clean energy I am using."

FFI is eliminating actual emissions not offsetting emissions. https://www.reuters.com/business/sustainable-business/fortescue-spend-62-bln-rid-iron-ore-ops-fossil-fuels-by-2030-2022-09-19/

as long as they are eliminating... that is a good thing

I know this is not the forum for it but I will through out this retorical question for you all to ruminate on and draw your own conclusions or at least be informed..... Earth has only 0.04% Carbon Dioxide in its atmosphere, then how does Carbon emmission contribute to Global Warming ...more

Welcome back chrisp, long time no see. Are you back in, or just passing through ? Your post on Fortescue and FFI has been hailed by the greens and tree huggers since that announcement. "Twiggy" Forrest has other interest too, as he said about the Tasmainian Salmon farms investment, and seems to have listend to his children "Daddy. what happens when the World dies ???":-   ...more

I'm just lurking and may get back in once ALMTF starts high volume trading. That probably won't occur for another 6 to 12 months. I don't like owning a stock with virtually no liquidity. Good luck to Almonty shareholders.
