South Korean President Declares Martial Law

Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared emergency martial law against "antistate forces" Tuesday night in an unannounced press conference.

“I declare martial law to protect the Republic of Korea from the threats of North Korean communist forces, to immediately eradicate the unscrupulous pro-Pyonygang antistate forces that pillage the freedom and happiness of our people and to protect free constitutional order,” Yoon said in an emergency press conference at the Yongsan presidential office in Seoul.

“Through emergency martial law, we will rebuild and protect the free Republic of Korea, which is falling into ruin.”

Yoon vowed to “eradicate such antistate forces and the culprits of the country’s ruin who have committed evil acts up until now.”

Not war with North Korea thankfully. Seems to be the President trying to cling to power as he was about to be impeached. Will depend on who the military and police will support because the national assembly can vote down his declaration.

Was voted down by parliament but was still being enforced by the military who have no choice but to follow the voice the president. News just in that the president will in fact swiftly lift martial law. There will be a press conference and I'm curious to see what he has to say in his defence, seems to have pinned himself between a rock and a hard place...not great news when something like this ...more

It's over, per the NYT: President Yoon formally lifted martial law in a Cabinet meeting early Wednesday, six hours after he declared it, according to the government. The South Korean military said that all troops mobilized under martial law have returned to their units.
