RE Propane Exports at RIPET

From what I have been able to ascertain, AltaGas has two licenses to ship 40,000 barrels per day from RIPET, for a total of 80,000 per day.  I am not sure where the bottleneck is to achieve a higher volume.  It could be the gathering system, the trains, the port, or the market.

One thing I wonder about is the loading facility at the port.  The berth adjacent to the propane storage tanks appears to be used to load both coal and propane. I doubt that it would possible to load both products at the same time.  With just one berth, loading faster or more often seems to be the route to higher volume.

Can anyone provide further illumination on this?

The next couple of months should give you an answer to your questionning. Probably not the loading by what we have seen during the last week because the last LPG Tanker was loaded in a record time or  4 days  compared to 8 days in the past. Quite obvious that they can use one berth and no way to load two LPG Tanker at the same time  as it was confirmed by the Prince Rupert Port ...more

Bottleneck, expansion is required at the wharf and rail system to Prince Rupert; especially if the Ridley Island Exports Logistics Park and Vopak Pacific Terminal projects go ahead. From what I've been able to find since RIPET opened in 2019,  Alta has a minority partner, VOPAK, who will be building a tank farm next door to RIPET.  Among the shared facilities mentioned is a wharf for 2 ships and ALTA is suppose to have access to one side.  the last I heard, VOPAK will be starting construction this year if the project stays on schedule.  Hopefully the ...more

Thanks Rocko58.  The Forum sometimes forgets that Vopak has 30% ownership of Ripet.    From  what I  understand Ridley Terminals is responsible for  the the construction of the expansion berth that is discussed.  They are proposing the expansion and will proceed as soon as all environmental studies and approvals have been granted.  Governments  don ...more
