Help

Yes I said good-bye but also that I'd be back sometimes. Just didn't think this soon. Can anyone verify if it is every brokerage that is lending only 50 percent margin on ALA or are there some brokerages back to 70% ?
I would really appreciate it if someone or several could check it out for me. I will tell you when/ if TD changes it's mind. Many thanks in advance. Cheers

ALA is listed on the list of eligible securities for reduced margins provided by IIROC, as far as I know it always has been... I know Scotiabank's terms of eligibility have always allowed for 70%, but I've held it in a TFSA therefor no Margin ability so I cannot confirm at the moment that it has that allowance. I will put a bullshit purchase order in tomorrow in my margin account and ...more

Jay: so very nice to have you take this time to check it out. I was surprised and disappointed in TD. I think they were working off f volatility during the March 2020 period but only do a reassessment every three months. Very grateful as I will switch some assets over if that is the case - 70% for Scotia.  Cheers

I meant to have a little nap and ended up sleeping like 5 hours lol I just checked, Scotiabank has ALA at 70% margin. Be advised switching accounts to Scotia they have higher transaction fees and account fees if your accounts are below certain thresh holds, I do not really recommend Scotia at all, I've had issues with thier iTrade people in that it's incredibly hard to get ...more

You have more patience than most I suspect.   I would not and could not put up with that poor level of service no matter what better borrowing rates and other little perks you got from them.    From what you've related,  that is disgraceful and you should have been  compensated by the manager for the mistake in your margin account.    Also not being able to ...more

Ouch, big banks, big fees and no interest on savings. My wife liked to keep lots of money in a savings account at TD.  Paid her nothing in interest.  I like credit unions as they provide the services I need and will pay 1.4% as opposed to 0.010. Showed her how she could multiple times her interest by moving to a credit union and she tried it. She is very happy with her move plus she ...more

Hi Gunner:  Jay was researching for me about where the best margin possibilities are for ALA stock.   TD used to loan 70% of the value but changed it to 50% some time ago.  I want to go to an account that will margin at 70%  - It was becdasue of the volatility in 2020  but they should hav ereversed it    but the Scotia experience sounds terrible.    ...more

My "preferred" account at TD pays diddly as well and the bank just upped the required minimum balance for no fee transactions to $5000!!  Talk about giving the finger to your longtime customers!  I can make $50/month on that balance elsewhere.

Just another reason to check out a CU.  I left them 45 years ago with no regrets and treated much better than the big banks.  CU's want your business.
