if all those shorts are a simple passive arbitrage as you say (shorting gcm and buying goldx in case goldx gets a higher bid), then why was goldx trading at an ~8 cent discount to gcm for the longest time until recently, and why would a passive arbitrage be desperately trading 33% of the volume?

Tell this idiot sopr-anal to check the trading rules in Canada and check what kind of leeway they have with regards to daily short trading versus what is considered O/S short position and compare the actual settlement rules  of naked shorting to that of the States or any other western jurisdiction. OK, join the shorters then and enjoy.  Just remember that a shorter effectively become a future long when they have to buy back.  Shorting gold in the early innings of a new gold bull market isn't the wisest choice in my book, but each to their own. Your premise on GCM seems to be that since GCM has historicallly been undervalued and unappreciated it will continue to be so
