sorry, you are completly wrong ... this was a time the POG was down sharply and barrick wrote-down some assets at its balance sheet ...   NON-CASH ... and this 8 billion was a company- wide number .. pascua lama was a huge open pit project that would have affected the environment. soto is underground with a tiny footprint that does not affect the environment. huge difference. according to the map shown by red cloud, soto is not even in the environmentally protected area of santander. soto is outside that zone. a lot of fear mongering for a project that is years away and the petro government ...more

No one can say for sure about these things. Barrick did everything they could to adress the environmentalists complaints. They were willing to commit many millions more to make the project conform to any issue. And that mine would have put Chile on the map as a major mining jurisdiction. Barrick even committed millions to enhance the lives of tge local peasants. But the government favored the ...more

they must want to follow the huge successful experiment of venezuela. not many politicians know how to mine. 100% of closed mines = $0 again, an underground mine with tiny footprint has much better odds of going through than a huge superpit crossing 2 countries. the soto area already has illegal artisanal miners using polluting mercury. if aris builds a mine there, they would actually be ...more
