Ron

When my ex father-in-law sold his beer company to Heineken in 2002-2003, the CEO and his wife and the CFO flew in for one dinner at his mansion and I was seated to entertain the CFO.

The Worldcom scandal of bookcooking had just hit the news and as I had lost a couple of a hundred Ks, I naturally asked the CFO if one can trust financial statements considering Bernie Ebbers (then CEO) was capitalizing and therefore depreciating expenses over many years to boost earnings. His answer was you can only trust the page numbers in financial statements.

Hahaha So very very true Gabriel.   Nothing is secure and things can so easily be manipulated or massaged to pass the "white glove test".  When I started investing about 26 years ago, things were much more honest and transparent and you did not have the issues we see today regarding "shorting stocks, excessive insider stock options, insider trading, fat cat and lazy CEO ...more

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I agree with every word. While HITI is not my cup of tea, I am surprised how the maket reacted. I would like you please to look at Aecon with your sharp construction accountant eyes on Alex's and my own behalf. It appears per their CFO, that they had earned (EBITDA) - 375m in the last 12 months excluding LSTKs. With the completion of those in 2025 and ...more

Hi Gabriel Yes Aecon is one I have my eyes on.  If didn't get to my strike price of around $9.00 I wanted.  If there is one I will buy it's Aecon.  It's in a similar position as SNC with the LSTK overhang still there.   If we get any kind of overall market pullback which I believe is indeed coming I will buy it.  Nothing wrong with the engineering sector imo ...more

Hello Ron, This is a case of what is referred to as utility theory and risk analysis. Imagine 3 investors, say Gabriel, Alex and Ron.  Gabriel buys (2.x) shares at 11$ Alex buys (1.x) shares at 11$ and hopes to double at 9$. Ron buys nothing and hopes to buy (2.x) shares at 9$. Assuming there is 66% probability that the stock goes to 9$ before hitting 15$, the three have the same ...more

Gabriel : 1/3 (15-11) (2x) + 2/3 (15-11) (2x) = 8 x dollars profit  Ron: (1/3) (0) + (2/3) (15-9) (2.x) = 8 x dollars profit  Alex: (1/3) (15-11) (1x) + 2/3 (15+15-11-9) (1.x) = 8 x dollars profit  if chances are 50/50 to drop to 9, Gabs beats both.

ARE has been trading roughly between 10 and 20$:in the last decade while maintaining its dividend along the way (and actually increasing it).  So this is a stock to own until next peak at 20$+. I have increased my position to 85000 shares last friday. I will now post on ARE subsection.

I am not out yet, slowly selling on strength as we move up. Issue I have is Trudeau is hastily cutting 15,4B in spending which tells me governments are the largest drivers of inflation and are being hurt by central banks. I therefore expect a substantial slowdown in public works spending, and that starts with engineering contracts. Plus Aecon pays over 9 times more dividends and is four times ...more
