BlackBerry and Facebook Reach Settlement in Global Patent Fight

Jan. 15, 2021, 7:49 AM

BlackBerry Ltd. said it’s settled a dispute with Facebook Inc. over patent royalties for terms that weren’t disclosed.

“We have resolved our disputes pursuant to a confidential agreement and have no further comment,” BlackBerry spokeswoman Karen Clyne said in an email. Facebook officials didn’t immediately respond to a query seeking comment.

BlackBerry sued Facebook in 2018, claiming the social media giant was using BlackBerry inventions in its popular messaging applications. Facebook responded with a successful campaign to challenge BlackBerry patents, and launched its own suit accusing BlackBerry of infringing patents for voice messaging technology.

Will we ever find out how many billions this settlement was for?

The settlement may be a combination of royalties and a lump sum.

Is it just me or shouldn't we eventually find this out with a public company? Surely it will show up in some of the public documentation. "And this year a billion or so showed up from undisclosed sources..."

Why would Facebook settle for billions of dollars over the potential infringement of one patent? The market is grossly over estimating the potential settlement. Two days ago this was a 3.9 billion dollar company. Facebook could have simply bought the entire company for 6 billion. I believe the settlement will be closer to 30-50 million and Facebook will cover Blackberrys legal costs.

This is also very similar to the time when BlackBerry settled with Nokia. Everyone was expecting hundreds of millions of dollars. In the end it was settled for something like 40 million dollars.

wow, all the hype for some patents. not the news I wanted but still good news. I'll take it. Perhaps, next time we get the elusive take over news...

Patagonia, you are hilarious. Everyone knows: 1) BB's market cap is grossly undervalued 2) Chen/Watso would not allow BB to be sold <$100/share 3) FB profitted billions from it's unlicensed use of BB technology 4) FB's unwillingless to support BB's BB10 platform while using unlicensed BB technology was a factor in BB's deimise from a 100 billion+ market cap company to what ...more

Undervalued or not Chen has a fiduciary duty to operate in the best interest of Blackberry shareholders and if a real offer was presented he has to take that to the shareholders. If the majority of the shareholders accept it , that's it, company sold. No one knows how much the settlement is for but given the Blackberry's patent infringement case was wideld down from 7 patents to one and ...more

Pantogonia you sound like someone who has lost money over the last two days rather than up 35% More news next week as the share price reflects much more than patents and settlements. Cheers

I'm a shareholder but im also realistic. No Blackberry patent settlement to date is in the hundreds of millions let alone billions. In many of those cases there was several patents in dispute. In this case it's been whittled down to one. With respect to the potential settlement, in the past 5 days the market value is up almost 3 billion. Do you really think Facebook is going to pay 3 ...more
