Hey David, WhatsApp is owned by Facebook. BB has been rumoured to be finalizing a patent deal with FB, negotiations ongoing for the past few quarters. IMO, WhatsApp being fined for a significant breach underlines the importance for them to work with BB. BB has the security software and (messaging) patents that they and other companies need. mas75

Is the quarter $bn for mishandling personal info an indicator of what the judgement against FB would have been had it gone to court for stealing/profiting from BB tech?

Good question. I am by no means an expert of patent judgements and how damages are calculated. However, if BB and FB don't settle out of court (with a patent agreement - negotiations fall through) the damages awarded to BB would likely be at least 5-10x the WhatsApp fine. that is, damages would be $1b-$2b or more. It's my understanding that there are 2 sepearte legal actions - 1 in Europe and 1 in the U.S. I have not seen anything definitive on either settlement? I could be wrong. I would hope to get this out of the way so the market can focus on the other peices of the Blackberry puzzle. Phones law suites are all legacy discussions. The strength of the new Blackberry is in the front of us. New puzzle ...more

If the patent deal falls thru or BB agrees to an amount far less than a billion then I don't think we'll ever hear the end of it from Wilma. How the rest of us interpret it would be interesting but if the amount is far less than expectations then it will be hard not to join Wilma on the Goodbye Chen Bandwagon. Pivotal point in Chen's career at BB perhaps?
