Globe/wire say Bombardier told private jets targeted

2022-08-26 09:12 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that France reels from a summer of extreme temperatures and soaring energy prices, the French government is singling out the private jet. A New York Times item inside The Globe says that France's Transportation Minister called for flights by such planes to be restricted because of their outsize contribution to climate change, while a prominent lawmaker for the Green Party said he would introduce a bill to ban them altogether. The announcements have struck a chord in France, where weeks of severe drought and wildfires have brought home the realities of global warming, stoking a larger debate about consumer responsibility for addressing climate change. Calls for better conservation of energy are also growing in France, like in much of Europe, as the war in Ukraine squeezes supplies of gas and oil. "Without resorting to demagogy or launching ad hominem attacks, there is certain behaviour that is no longer acceptable," Clment Beaune, the Transportation Minister, said as he announced his plan to regulate private jets. The options requiring companies to disclose trips taken on private planes, or expanding the European Union's emissions trading program to include the jets.

I hear what you saying ... why do we allow huge passenger ships to travel around the planet only for pleasure ??? There are many things we can eliminate to save the planet , only to slow down  the inevitable , and that is that the planet will cease  to exist eventually unfortunately... GLTA e arou

To put it in perspective, there is an argument about the the eficiency of private jets similar to the argument of mass transit versus single rider cars. It's obvious that carbon footprint per passenger is infinitely larger on a private jet versus commercial flights...but in the same argument, how far did the abolition of single driver cars go ? All you can do  actually is give incentives ...more

it is the french gov that are behind restricted business jets ,,,,, will that affect Macron and other prime ministers travel? may be they will have to take a boat, train or drive or better yet use a bicycle

There are the same talking points in canada and the US ...Hollywood stars such as Dicrapio have been targetted about private jets   Macron and the french are not the only ones there are plenty to go around. Just a couple of examples https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/jul/21/kylie-jenner-short-private-jet-flights-super-rich-climate-crisis https://pagesix.com/2021/11/01 ...more

As a whole, Air cargo probably consumes 20x or more fuel than business jets.  Most of them are old gas guzzlers that consume massive amounts of fuel, they fly a lot of hours and there's a lot of them like perhaps 50-100 over the pacific every day.  Focusing on business jets is mis-guided.

Mis-guided for sure, but very visible and in the "we all need to be in this together" vulnerability bucket. The outfight ban seems highly unlikely, but maybe some superficial restrictions eventually get passed. Who knows, but it's potentially a material negative.

Pablo, as you said "Focusing on business jets is mis-guided." yes but since when those leaders came up with any thing that make sense. who kbows what they will decide later although bbd jets are most fuel effcient,  may be they will restricte flying bus jets made in canada for somr eason or the other wghat else can you expect from those guys

I think you have to point out the ridiculousness of the argument.  Assume there are 1200 air freighters in service worldwide.(at least 320 are 747's).  Assume flying hours (30x?) x fuel consumed (10x?) is 300x. 25 years of Bombardier production x 120 planes = 3000 business jets. So between business jets and air freighters and excluding passenger jets, Bombardier built aircraft ...more
