500 regional jet parked in USA

While Bombardier is out of regional jet market its good to follow up and see if it was the right decision.

And it was.  Had Bombardier not done that then we would still be in red from all the bleeding in regional division.  Same would be true for dash 8 division.

The regional jets parked problem is because of a acute pilot shortage.  I didn't know the problem was so bad.  It's led to this, from a Nov 2022 Regional Airline Assoc press release: “We are on the precipice of a wholesale collapse of small community air service,” noted Black. “It has already begun, with 60 U.S. airports losing more than half their air service since 2019.

And that means at least a little more demand for biz jets like Bomber's, to partially replace the lost flights from the bigger planes.  The only alternative for many of those former customers is to drive, which the PR points out is much more dangerous.  I suppose an offset might be a pressure on biz jet pilots, too, but I don't know the state of that dynamic.

There are enough pilots.  FAA/union created rules that require 1500 hour's of flight time while rest of world doesnt and the safety track shows the 1500 hour's in USA does not better in then less experience pilots flying regional in Europe. Also  regional Airlines dont pay enough so most go to bigger. Regional in small part is suffering from pilot shortage but bigger problem is ...more

The article says the problem is not enuf pilots.  Sufficiently qualified is simply an inherent part of that.   If there were more pilots, then the poaching from the bigger airlines would not be a problem.   Points to Bomber mgmt to get out of that regional jet sector, and the small plane one, too.  But what matters most now is how much additional business they can get from ...more
