just a guess

So much discussion on analysist target prices.

They say one year from now it is going to be X. Then they revise that number. Take -2% off target. And later they revise the number again. Doesn’t cost them anything. One analysist was telling us that in 2030, six years from now, BBD will hit target of $244. Doesn’t cost them anything. These guys can’t even predict if we will have rain on Tuesday. I mean six years from now? Hello.

I checked a list of over 200 stocks covered by Royal Bank. 48% were listed as outperform, 40% as sector perform and 1% as underperform, with 11% blank (i.e. no comment). It makes me wonder what their motivation is. All these outperforms. Are these business clients of theirs, that they don’t want to upset? Don’t want to lose the business? Like, what is their angle here with all these outperforms?

As far as I can see it is just a guess by the analysist. If he says Outperform it means he believes that the stock will perform better than the market average.

What do I believe? I believe I will have another drink.

Cheers! Enjoy the weekend.

This kind of comments was posts regularly. Yes we can be desilusonnal about the analysts about theirs targets. But we have to look at the full picture. Some analysts had bullish targets over 90$ but some have bearish ones; CIBC at 60$ now and back to 2023. UBS is at 44$ !!!. He can say that CIBC's was right...... and others were wrong. Stock market is unpredictable, that's the reason ...more

So, what you are saying is that part of their job is to predict the unpredictable. That sucks!   Snowey

I understand that they put them for marketing reasons.  Your choice, you can stick to theirs targets or understand what is the best thing to do with. For my part, I use them only to find which stock can perform best (amongst all stock) and what kind of return they could give if all other things works normally. But it is not a prediction.

Snowey ,   " wonder what their motivation is.?" IMO, every one want to make a living! they help market makers by their wild guesses, new comers get impressed and pulled in, maket scavengers raise sh. prices, and sell millions of shares'then drop the prices, some new comers panic and sell, and scavengers pocket big bucks no comments

Basically, it looks like manipulation. Just propaganda. Problem is that ordinary people get hurt and some have stayed with this stock for years, waiting for their target that never comes. Ordinary people pay, and the analysist: it doesn’t cost them anything.   My advice: take your eyes off their targets and set your own.   Snowey

My advice: take your eyes off their targets and set your own. Fine, agree, you understand.

You are absolutely right, we have all more or less already taken the bait.

Shamhorish, Tempo1 and Mauserintime945. Thanks for your comments.   Writing about these guys helps me clarify things. They have had far too much influence. It helps me put them in their place. Always suspect a little bit of pump and dump going on. Be careful out there. Hope this play works out well for us.   All the best.   Snowey

No analyst said it will reach 244, RBC said max upside is $244, max downside is $40.  PT is $95 stop cherry picking data or having selection vision people!

OK. Here is the reference where RBC referred to a 2030 target of $244 (RBC did not say maximum – they can’t, no one can).   Post by Tempo1 on Apr 05, 2024 11:16am RBC: Extracts from the full report     About a 2030 target ??   2030 upside potential. and once again we have cherry picked facts not including the full story, now for the continuation: Downside scenario valuation   Downside valuation of $40 (-28% implied return) reflects lower demand and failure to execute on 2025 targets. Our downside scenario of $40 assumes several challenges, including significant retraction in business jet orders due to a weak global economy and ...more
