When to sell

Many people sharing when they intend to sell. Usually when they reach a certain target. Some consult Japanese candles – this sounds so stupid to me. For others it is they try to time a sell intending to repurchase shortly after if the price drops (day traders). I bet their brokers love them.
 
So, what to do? Should I have a target number?
 
How about letting Bombardier ride until the fundamentals change? What I mean is when:
  • EPS down
  • Revenues down
  • Margin down
  • Management quits
  • Backlog down
  • Jet market demand drops
  • Increasing Debt
  • Owners canceling orders
  • FCF dropping
  • Moody’s rating falling
Right now, all is good. That means you hold.
 
I’m going to let it ride for another few years.
 
We stand to make good money here.

Those sound like targets on when to sell out completely based on disappointing news. On the day if news happens you can pretty much expect a 20%+ drop in the stock. In fact, more than that is even possible. My sell targets are ones designed at "trimming" on the way up. I won't be selling all, I have a core position that I intend to keep but at least I will harvest some gains in the ...more
