AT&T Talk About Lead Cables

Comment by Quintessential1 on Jul 18, 2023 10:10am
Morningstar tends to agree. "AT&T and Verizon: We Don’t Expect Major Liability Tied to Lead in Telecom Cable Sheathing Analyst Note Michael Hodel, CFA, Director, 14 Jul 2023 A series of articles in The Wall Street Journal concerning lead in cable sheathing dealt yet another blow to investor sentiment around telecom stocks. An analyst downgrade of AT&T citing potential legal liability ...more

Interesting that Canadian media is completely ignoring this development so far. BCE has gotta have similar cable runs in parts of its network.

They would actually have to do some investigative journalism. The WSJ broke this story and researched it with fairly deep pockets. Any media trying to connect the dots through guessing would be subjecting themselves to some pretty large libel if it turned out to not be true. As it is it is looking like a bit of a nothing burger as AT&T says that less than 10% of its cabling was ever lead ...more

There's no need to run a study like the WSJ did. They could simply contact BCE to learn if company has lead-shielded cabling and publish an article with their response while referencing the situation in the US. To date, nowhere in the CBC international news section is there a report on the issues uncovered by the WSJ. I figured the CBC would be running a basic story already since they ...more

Most media has a strong environmental focus these days.   I would have thought that since the WSJ broke the story in the states that the Globe and Mail would have picked it up in Canada.  The WSJ includes several examples of what they determine lead contaminated sites caused by the lead sheathed cables.  Without any Canadian sites to point to as having similar contamination I ...more

FYI: T submitted a filing on an oustanding court case to remove cable running under Lake Tahoe. It is a blistering attack on the credibility of WSJ report. Worth the read imo.  https://about.att.com/ecms/dam/pages/legacy-cable/2023-07-18_Calif_Sportfishing_v_Pac_Bell-Defendants_Supplemental_Status_Report.pdf

It is a good read, thanks for posting it. It looks like AT&T has taken the, a good offense is a good defense, approach.   Hopefully they shoulder the publicity burden that BCE could face in Canada and hopefully BCE takes a proactive approach in mitigating any liability that remains with their existing cabling.
