Trump tarriffs and the latest acquisitions.

So I am not extremely well versed in this particular industry and I am a young investor so please pardon my ignorance if it's obvious;

With the threat of 25% blanket tariffs on Canada by America, would that also then include telecom services from BCE? I know it's likely that it's a bluff (atleast the 25% level) but could tariffs (even blanket tariffs) really be applied to telecommunications services? I'm trying to wrap my head around how screwed the entire economy is about to be an this particular stock ticker popped into my head. I tried finding mention of this particular industry in the head lines from the past couple hours, and can't find anything.

please be kind in the responses. Genuine questions from a dude trying to make sense of this.

I find Perplexity questions get answered quite well, be as specific as possible.

Do you think tariffs would encompass telecommunications services?
Comment by BlueDawn on Nov 26, 2024 6:50pm
Actually this is one thing services get away with. also the company and billing structure would remain in the us lower taxes and all...

Actually can the company flip itself and make the American company the parent of the Canadian company... would be interesting to see what happens next :)

Isn't that what Encana did a few years ago when they moved their HQ to Denver?

BlueDawn.....they can't flip to the American company owning BCE since it would violate Canadian law regarding foreign ownership restrictions (foreigners can't own more than 20%) of Canadian telecommunications companies.  So your idea is a non starter.

Do you think this is a rule that Trump may push to change?
Comment by 567432Gains on Nov 26, 2024 7:50pm
So you are not foreseeing the tariffs impacting the acquisition. This is because the the acquired company is essentially just staying in the US and will be like a subsidiary located in the US already?  Cheers for the reply by the way!
Comment by BlueDawn on Nov 27, 2024 12:22am
Yeah the services part and revenue I'm not concerned about. the fiber build out though if that's not using USA made parts then those parts would be subject to the tariffs, but that would apply to any company operating in the us.

567432Gains...never assume that the 25 percent tariff is a bluff. Look who we are dealing with (his plan should surprise no one). Prepare yourself for extreme volatility throughout his presidency.

It's definitely a bluff. Never assume that Trump's first word will be his last. It's called negotiating. He starts off high so he can have power to negotiate lower.

Ya I think I might just buy some gold at this point, it's down 5% this month and looking at the long run it seems to have done well at least for my goals.  Been considering BRK.B as well looking at the performance in pas recessions.  BCE is something I really want to hold but like everything right now I'm concerned about the next while volatility wise as you said. I guess ...more

Gold and dare I say BTC have been great to hold through the chaotic developments of the last few years. I think it's reasonable to allocate a few % of your total portfolio to such non-correlated assets.
