Really?  Nobody is giving up on BCE with a recent BMO analyst target upgrade to $59 and a 7% dividend, not to mention the Fed confirmimg lower interest rates coiming in a few months.  BCE share price is just adjusting for the .97 cent dividend it will be paying out on Jan 15th as it typically does. it's only down about .69 cents right now if you get a quote via RBC Action Direct ...more

An analyst on BNN today spent some time talking about how much of a deal BCE.PR.H preferred shares are from a dividend standpoint.  10% div sustainable at a cheap price. The preferreds jumped today right after.  Probably some retailers jumping ship at Market to get over there.
Comment by autofocus111 on Dec 15, 2023 11:24am
I've only recently been digging into preferreds, so my take here may be wrong, but BCE.PR.H is a floater until the next reset in May 2026. And the yield on par of the fixed rate twin is ony 3.37%. I see no reason to buy this one if you believe the BOC will be cutting rates next year.
Comment by Experienced on Dec 15, 2023 12:33pm
Agreed autofocus....it is far better to buy a preferred with a fixed coupon in a potentially declining interest rate environment.  In this scenario, if interest rates do go down, then the SP of the preferred will go up and thereby increase your total return. In this vein, a I recently bought some ENB.PR.H and currently enjoying a 9% dividend yield on my cost base and a decent (unrealized ...more

Perhaps....but in the meantime the preferreds pay 15c a month and didn't drop 2% today.  9.96% div.  Rates have to drop 3% to even that out with the common shares.  Which I'm also hanging on to.
Comment by Experienced on Dec 15, 2023 3:40pm
Longholder...up to you and depends on how long your hold is in terms whether there are better preferreds.  IMO since the BCE H  preferreds are floating you are less likely to get some capital gains as interest rates go down compared to a fixed rate preferred. The commons have been a long term hold of mine and I picked up some more this afternoon.
Comment by Longholder99 on Dec 15, 2023 4:09pm
I see your point and a good exit strategy is in all smart investors minds 100%.  I don't think the rates will drop that quickly until maybe mid summer and institutional ownership on these preferreds is long term thing....not a huge float so trading doesnt move like lightning.  Today the 4% I didn't lose on the BCE shares I sold to by the preferred shares (I still hold a decent ...more

Longholder...yes for sure money can be made holding fixed income at times like this....I employed this strategy when I was still a financial advisor back during the Great Recession in 2008/09 (retired in 2010) and am doing the same now in prep for a possible recession next year. I guess my point is...not to sound preachy....but at times like this you can do better not holding a preferred with a ...more

I will be all over this stock below 50. That would be a gift.
Comment by Experienced on Dec 16, 2023 5:19pm
Yep condor....if it does I will overweight and sell the extra later for a profit
Comment by 1condor on Dec 17, 2023 11:03am
Technical analysis says it will bounce at 50.75. So getting it below 50 dollars may be pushing it.
Comment by 1condor on Dec 19, 2023 11:55am
Stock slowly grinding its way down to that 50.75 support level.
Comment by 1condor on Dec 20, 2023 4:35pm
Dont we all just love year end. Large swings and opportunities abound within the volatility. BCE is still slowly griding its way down to the support of 50.75. Talk of a divvy cut is BS...never happen. In fact BCE will raise its divvy through 2024.

HoneyBadger__Some brokers such as your RBC TAKE OFF the Dividend Amount and  THUS show a REDUCED Previous Day Closing Price on the Ex DIVIDEND Day. So 55.32 WAS the Previous Day Closing Price__MINUS the 97 Cent Dividend = 54.35 Comment by HoneyBadger77on Dec 14, 2023 3:31pm 78 Views  Post# 35785310 RE:!!!!,,,,,DOWN 2.5%%% on Ex Dividend Date........!!! ...more

Well  Red_Deer, if RBC does infact adjust the Previous Close price to reflect the Div payment I've never noticed it before with any other stocks and you'd think that the RBC representative I spoke with would know that, yet he was just as perplexed by it as I was. The interesting thing was that the RBC charts still showed the correct $55.32 close but the quotes data showed a $54.35 ...more
