US Power Plant Coal Inventory Is Low

Furthermore, wilh the recent drop in price Natural gas is now priced a lot

cheaper than any US coal that can be produced east of the Mississippi.

Illinois basin and Central Appalachia coal is still ~$8/mmbtu. And there is 

pressure to export that coal since ocean bound coal prices are 

still at least double those in the US. IMO Coal prices will have to drop quite
a bit for these lower gas prices to stick.

Coal usage in power generation in the USA is currently lower by 4% compared to last year Also coal exports are currently being hampered by strike action at Westshore Terminals CelsiusEnergy: Powerburn Metro Vancouver ports traffic jam likely with Westshore coal terminal strike (msn.com)

Hi Oldnagger. The power plant coal inventory seems too low despite coal being relied on less. I have been trying to understand it better but the US coal market is even more complex than the natural gas market. Something more seems to have been keeping natural gas prices elevated thru the summer and I think the coal/gas arbitrage is a large part of it. The coal power plants in the east need ...more
