Humor me while I vent

I know this is "preaching to the choir" but I am really tired of this ESG double standard when it comes to even treatment across ALL sectors , not just O&G . I am all for a cleaner , healthier planet but it seems this goal is lost in a wave of hatred for domestic O&G while mining/construction/power generation get a free pass .

Metal mining for EV battery elements are some of the biggest environmental and humanitarian violators in the world but not one word is ever mentioned about child labour or environmental impact . Mining uses acids left on leach pads or unregulated settling ponds containing toxic contents worse than any oil sand sites . Chile is having real trouble with Lithium mining , rivers and lakes are being drained for brine ponds but that water is never treated or returned to the system . That water evaporates and is gone forever leaving parched dry land the can't sustain farming or ranching anymore . What happens when they run out of water ?

Is an electric car more important than water ?

Where is the outrage .... where is the news coverage .... where are the tree huggers ? The tree huggers are paddling plastic kayaks to protest whatever project they're paid to boycott on that particular day and cbc is right there to video the entire event .

Whether its Uyghurs being exploited in China , child labour in African cobalt mines or Russian oil , western society continues to passively support these corrupt and illegal enterprises while hampering our own energy security . O&G revenues build schools , hospitals , highways , health care and the list goes on . Who wins by forcing a child to work for pennies in a cobalt mine ?

Is an EV more important than childhood ?

Nobody ever speaks of the carbon intensity of making concrete or more agregious , the carbon footprint of climate crusaders . Flying private jets to conferences politicians could do with a zoom call is a joke . COP conferences are nothing more than paid luxury vacations while you are told to drive less or turn down the thermostat .

Look how quickly Europe turned to "dirty" coal after becoming so dependant on Russian gas that even Donald Trump could see how vulnerable they were to Putin's mood swings . The UK (new) PM Liz Truss is the only politician to admit that past policy's have damaged energy security by not having any transition plan . Truss is encouraging O&G production through friendly legislation which north america seems unwilling to do . This obstructive environment here only ensures that production will remain flat at best and any real relief is years and another government away .

We're not talking about tobacco or booze , O&G is security , mobility , comfort , industry , power , food production .........  anyone in their right mind saying O&G is unnecessary or replacable doesn't have both oars in the water .

Politicians in North America (US/Canada) decide what to do based on popular opinion. Their main bjective is to win the next election and stay in power. It is "NOT" to do what is right for the nation, but rather to do what is right in the eyes of the general population who each have an equal say. equality through the electorate ounds like a good idea until the media swings their opinions ...more

I agree with you Masfortuna:  The media skews the true to sell ad's and make money. There are a lot of good people on this planet but the media supports those that sell notwithstanding  that their ideals may be wrong. This is happening in Canada with the so called slaves and natives etc.  The "Truth and Consequences" movement is all about money and nothing else ...more

Well I guess "we get the government we deseve" is an appropriate axiom.

Just a couple of points masfortuna , I don't believe "we get the government we deserve" , instead I say we got the government people were too lazy to really look into . Canadian media want liberals in power so Canadians unknowingly pay taxes to keep this crooked media financially sound . MSM generate fear of conservatism by vilifying CPC/Rep politicians and glorify unqualified ...more

Yes I think we are saying the same thing.  according to your statement, 'We get the government people were to lazy to  look into", is why we get the government we deserve. Although you are looking at this through actual party politics, I don't really think there will be a huge difference between PC or Liberal governments.  As for the Millenials and Gen Z group, this oly ...more

Well masfortuna , we are viewing this from the same side of the fence although artificial "self esteem and selfworth" won't give you the tools to get to the moon or Mars for that matter . Self esteem comes through achievement and as much as today's society says different , without "competition" , participation awards are as useless as a VW bug at the Indy500 . Removing  ...more

Unfortuanetly academia has been hijacked by marxists ideologues and their extreme ideas around race, social justice and victimhood have now permiated every level of society. Government backed student loan guarantees have grown college arts departments like a giant tumor to the point where the majority of young adults are being indoctrinated and sent into the world with a useless degree in Victim ...more

Excellent post HighO.   The hypocritical west continues to look away as human rights are violated and I think it can be summed up with the following .... the politicians are busy lining their pockets while convincing an ignorant populace of impending doom.   Western democracy has forgotten its principles and in the end it will take mass poverty, followed by mass violence and a Terror ...more

most metals have a purpose. The one that gets me is gold mining. As a metal it has no real purpose beyond jewellery. I'd love to see Trudeau ramps up and aggressive campaign against the carbon footprint of the gold mining industry. It won't happen because a huge percentage of it is in Quebec.
Comment by stock_for_gold on Sep 17, 2022 11:23am
You obviously don't know much about gold if you think the only purpose is jewellery. It's used in quite a bit of electronics
Comment by Chrisinvan7 on Sep 17, 2022 11:53am
Uhhh what? Gold has the most useful properties of any metal, by far the best conductor of electricity.
Comment by JohnnyDoe on Sep 17, 2022 12:10pm
I recognize it's used in electronics, but that makes up a small percentage of its use "Approximately 8.0% of the demand for gold is for use in technology applications, mostly as a component of micro-circuitry in a range of electronic products" whereas about 85% is used for either jewellery or wealth reserves this NR Can site has details on how gold is used. https://www.nrcan.gc.ca ...more
Comment by Chrisinvan7 on Sep 17, 2022 12:48pm
Yes, and that 8% figure would be significantly higher were it not so expensive and its expensive because of its scarcity and superior properties. Certain mission critical applications absolutely require it and so its used despite the cost.

Seems everyone is having a "squirrel" moment with this gold conversation so in that light here's a couple of fun facts on gold . Gold does not rust , it does not react with oxygen and 1 ounce of gold can be pounded thin enough that it will cover the surface of a football field . White gold is alloyed with nickel to give it the silver tone but otherwise pure gold is always yellow . It ...more
