The last glacial period began about 100,000 years ago and lasted until 25,000 years ago. Today we are in a warm interglacial period.

By this definition, Earth is in an interglacial period—the Holocene. The amount of anthropogenic greenhouse gases emitted into Earth's oceans and atmosphere is predicted to delay the next glacial period by between 100,000 and 500,000 years, which otherwise would begin in around 50,000 years.

And that is actually a good thing if we can delay the next glaciation period. If you consider that 40% of the world's land mass is located above the boundary of the glaciation zone, it would pretty much take out most of Europe and a good chunk of North America not to mention 75% of Asia.  It's a good thing that Africa and South America above Brazil and the Middle East is where we have ...more
