Bids and asks are meaningless until trading begins. Bored brokers and traders have been known to play games with the bid and ask. At the last moment all of their games vanish and then trading begins.

Fair enough. I don't have level 2 and I don't know if I would understand it if I did. However, can you possibly explain to me premarket on NYSE? 35K shares have already traded somehow and both the bid and ask are above yesterdays close. I'm not trying to stir anything here. I honestly don't understand this one.

Different exchanges have different rules when it comes to after market trading and premarket trading. In all cases volume is light and the results should be ignored. In many cases orders from the previous trading session are reconciled after hours. Reality starts when the exchanges start the normal trading day.
