Your honest opinion on long term shareholders value

I've owned this stock since 2009 as a family inheritance when it was mid 30's. Not a huge amount, approx 1100 share. Unfortunately I didn't average down during the massive dips of the last couple years. I've always been a long term divided investor and I'm on the fence now about if I should sell a portion or all. I'd still be selling at a loss (roughly 30%) but just glad I didn't panic sell when we were in the 5's. I have concerns about long term holds in oil. I am still about 10 years to retirement but have my reservations on holding. Any insights would be appreciated. Good luck to all.

It would be very hard to help you narrow down which path you want to take without you very clearly stating your reservations.

Simply my reservation is for the long term prospects associated with this industry in Canada. I had even shares between Cenovus and Encanna.  Encanna closed shop and went south sending my share count down by about 1/4 or so after the rebranding as Ovintiv and they have also been on a tear and now sit at close to $60. Don't like selling at a loss but I am truly torn.

Fwiw I was in somewhat of the same boat alltho I did average down at 5 -12 on ccenovus. Just recently sold half the ovintiv. Not that I don't think they won't go higher. I do. But having said that who really knows what might happen with the energy market. With my luck the US might just strike a deal with Iran, venezuela might start pumping like there is no tomorrow and we might just find ...more

Ok, well CVE was much better positioned then ECA prior to the 2019 COVID meltdown. One of ECA's reason for redomiciling to the  USA was so they could be picked up in index funds with the idea that would create stability in the share price. They do seem to be doing rather well at the moment.  It is far to question the long-term viability of Canadian oil and gas. I do it ...more

I am not giving any financial advice on whether you should sell or hold but the stock will be near $25 by May.

I think a lot of people have concerns about long term holds in the energy sector.  Many are still showing the scars from the past. Just my opinion, but I think looking at the past is not a good indication of the future in all regards.  I think everyone invested here knows and understands the risks but we all have good reason to feel very positive about Cenovus and the future for the ...more

smart post .. very well written. really Like the observation "The high oil prices seem to have investors nervous instead of excited" So true
Comment by parcheg on Mar 03, 2022 7:54pm
Well, weighng in here, my comments: I believe nvestors are nervous only because their brokers moved a lot of their customer assets into renewables along with tech stocks... with  mantra that wd suggest something like: O & G is dead, Go ESG, Go! Fact is, if you read anything published by Vaclav Smil out of Univ. of Man, in Winnipeg, (and Bill Gates is huge fan BTW) that the world needs ...more
