An US mega Cap oil giant can take a run at the big 3 in Canada. Long life oil sand properties make sense for them. Outright takeover might not be political possible though.

- your theory GOES AGAINST RECENT history - Shell, ConocoPhillips, TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil ALL MADE HUGE EXITS - Government of Canada will NOT PERMIT TAKEOVER of CNQ, SU and CVE - XOM BUYING OUT the ~ 30% of Imperial Oil that it DOES NOT OWN is a POSSIBILITY as KEARL Oil Sands mine is GETTING VERY PROFITABLE with LOW OPERATING COSTS and LONG LIFE RESERVES z173

- CNQ, SU, CVE and IMO are OUT OF THE QUESTION to MERGE with EACH OTHER due to REGULATORY CONSTRAINTS - however; TOU, ARX, PEY , BIR etc. are DEFINITELY POTENTIAL TARGETS in the natural gas SPACE - BITUMEN SAGD player MEG would be RIPE for M&A but it is PRICY at this moment - then there is the WHOLE BUNCH of E&P targets in the SMALLER producers z173
