Fdfd12: why are you so concerned about CIBC (79) selling on the TSX when you have insinuated numerous times that TSX has little bearing on SP,  since most shares trade on Nasdaq. Looking forward to how you reconcile your opposing thoughts.
Comment by fdfd12 on Mar 02, 2016 12:41pm
Sorry, I was not clear but now I will clear it up. 70% of trades are done by US firms on our exchange (TSX). Even a stock like HCG which only trades in Canada. 70% of the trades are done by US computers on HCG in Toronto since it only trades here.
Comment by Stockcoach1 on Mar 02, 2016 12:58pm
Well, I certainly didn't know that, as I have never seen this kind of information. Please post your source. Why would US trading houses trade in Canada at a higher cost, when they have their own trading platform. In your example of HCG it's different, as it only trades in Canada and there is no other option. But not CXR. Besides this contradicts the fact that Canada has only 200-400K short ...more

I have heard on several and many shows that the TSX is traded by US around 70%.

I just called a trader on the floor of the TSX working for BNS. He told me, he doesn't have the data but for DUAL LISTED stocks, over 60% of trades are done by US firms and hedge funds. I would appreciate it if any of you have access to certain individuals who can confirm this, thanks.

Fdfd12, I find that stat absolutely incredibe. Canada's TSX makes up only a few percent of world market, and you're saying that the US investor makes up 70% of that? Then take the other foreign investors from around the world. I'm sure they make up another 30%. That leaves no Candaians invested and trading in the TSX.  Wow, Now I'm going to pour myself a 4oz Scotch, to ...more

fdfd.... I too find this stat not believable ... I'd need the TSX to confirm that.

It means that previous down days in VRX were over-reaction and now they smell money to the upside.

Interesting that your hear say quote got 5 stars, and my query of it got 1 star. FD are you responsible for that?
Comment by fdfd12 on Mar 02, 2016 3:08pm
Stockcoach with all due respect, I have been on SH for around 10 years. I have NEVER given anyone stars, forget about myself. I know you pay attention to that. Yesterday, for fun, I posted something and wrote GIVE ME 5 STARS. I wrote that as a joke. I consider what stars give completely NOT IMPORTANT. I am not a teenager and have no interest in having "please give me 5 stars" type of ...more

Based on those numbers it would make sense but most americans don't know much about Canada or where it is. So, I think they would be inclined to not go there for buying stocks or whatever.

I don't really understand what you mean by all this. What I am saying is the following. On th TSX, if we have volume for the day of 300M, then around 200M was traded by US firms and personel. The rest was by Canadians (maybe 28%) and foreign (2%). I know and have heard that US is 60-70% of Canada's volume.
Comment by Stockcoach1 on Mar 02, 2016 3:12pm
Here we go again 5 stars for you right out of the gate,  on something that you heard and can't back up,  and one for me. There is an obvious pattern developing. I expect nothing more than a 1 star for this post.  Keep at it.

Makes sense FD. You have become one of the few voices of reason on here & thanks for the neutral minded posts. I learned about this US trading stat from you back in the fall of 2015. An example of this is on November 26, 2015 the American markets were closed for US Thanksgiving. CXR traded only 87,000 shares that day. Our average is 466,000 shares in the last 3 months. Also anyone who gives a ...more

Very true and thank you very much marketwatch. I forgot, that when US is closed, we get 20% of the volume here. VERY VERY TRUE. That shows us that US trades 60-70% of the volume in Canada.
Comment by adamchess on Mar 02, 2016 4:17pm
MW2011 - It could also mean that there is less Canadian trading at the same time that US market is closed. Just saying. Regards
Comment by fdfd12 on Mar 02, 2016 4:29pm
yes it can be
Comment by Stockcoach1 on Mar 02, 2016 4:33pm
Absolutely, you would be hard pressed to find a Canadian broker working on a us market has a holiday.
